The Manual setup will require a couple of extra steps compared to most manual setups.

Scene Setup

If you need to scale the system only scale the Parent object of each prefab. Try not to scale any of the gameobjects inside the prefab as that may result in undefined behavior.

Drag and drop the CrankLaserRifle Prefab from the “_Prefabs” folder located under “RuneFox/CrankLaserRifle/_Prefabs” onto your avatar. Right Click on the prefab and select Prefab→Unpack. This needs to be done in order to move some gameobjects out of the prefab later.

Setting up the Hand Constraints

Find the Left and Right Hand Constraint GameObjects. You’ll need to drag these into your avatar’s Armature so that they are parented to Left and Right Hands of the avatar.

Line the hand targets up with your avatar’s hands using the guide objects. You can select the individual targets inside each Hand Target and adjust them separately.

Grip Target - This is the default grip position of the rifle. You may need to angle it slightly if you have to twist your hand down awkwardly to shoot straight when firing with one hand.

Aim Target - When gripping the Rifle with two hands this is the object the rifle uses to aim toward your forward grip hand. From testing you’ll want this slightly inside of your hand for best visuals. Test in-game and adjust as necessary.

Setting up the Holster Location

The default location for the holster is your avatar’s Chest bone with the intent that you reach over your shoulder to grab it. The rifle is parented to the holster by default, use it as a guide when positioning the holster.

Drag the holster gameobject so that it’s a child of your avatar’s Chest bone. Rotate and move it so the rifle looks like it is in a good position for your avatar. Left handed users may want to rotate it so that you reach over your left shoulder to grab.

You may need to adjust the size and position of the Contacts in the Holster to position them back over your avatar’s shoulder if you’ve moved and rotated the holster a lot.

Avatar Manager 3.0 and other VRChat Things

Here we’re merging the FX Animator and Parameters of the Charge Laser Rifle prefab onto your Avatar using Avatars Manager 3.0. If you’ve manually added other complex assets to avatars before this part will be familiar to you.

I would recommend making a copy of your avatar’s FX controller as a backup as we will be merging multiple FX controllers onto your avatar so having a backup could be useful.

Open up the VRLabs Avatars 3.0 Manager window by selecting it from the VRLabs dropdown.

FX Animator Merge

Drag your avatar into the Avatar field on the manager window or select it from the popup by clicking on the little target on the right side of the field.

Expand the FX section and click the button at the bottom that says Add Animator to Merge.

Find the CrankLaserRifle_FX controller under “RuneFox/CrankLaserRifle/Animators”

Click Merge on Current
